Help Continue Keeping West San Gabriel Valley United!

On December 8, the California Citizens Redistricting Commission adjusted the draft maps to unite the West San Gabriel Valley in CD210, a request we had made with support of the analysis prepared by USC Political Science Professor Dr. Christian Grose and UCLA Political Science Associate Professor Dr. Natalie Masuoka.

THANK YOU so much for all your efforts getting word out, submitting feedback to the commission, and advocating for the community! Our voices and collective efforts made an impact!

KPCC mentioned that almost 300 public inputs were submitted online with our work being over 200 of those comments! Here is an article about the change: https://laist.com/news/politics/outcry-asian-majority-cities-of-san-gabriel-valley-back-sgv-redistricting

WE NEED TO KEEP UP THE WORK!
Although the WSGV community is currently united in the draft maps, changes can be made all the way up to the day final maps are released later this month. CAUSE will also continue to monitor what happens to the APA communities in the ESGV.

To affirm the changes and encourage the commissioners to keep the WSGV together, CAUSE sent a letter today to the commission. The letter (see here) thanks the commission for uniting the West San Gabriel Valley and reminds them that any future edits to the CD210 maps need to continue keeping our communities together.

Below is a template letter that mirrors the CAUSE letter:

Dear Commissioners,

I am writing to thank you for making changes to the CD210 map at the December 8, 2021 meeting. The Commission’s decision to draw CD210 in a way that protects Asian American voting rights signifies that the Commission hears and understands the community’s desire to progress forward. These changes to center the Asian American community as the largest minority community, include Asian American majority cities, and increase the Asian CVAP in the current CD210 map will ensure that the voting rights of the West San Gabriel Valley’s (WSGV) Asian American community are protected.

The original draft map of CD210 split the Asian American community, which resulted in an outcry from community members throughout San Gabriel Valley. I signed on to the CAUSE Joint Statement to ensure that our voices were heard by the Commission and that WSGV was united. As the Commission may choose to revisit the CD210 map between now and the certification of the final maps, I ask that you ensure that Asian American voting rights and political representation are protected in the WSGV by:

Centering the Asian American community as the largest minority community
Maintaining the Asian CVAP to as close to 35% as possible

Keeping cities with Asian American and Pacific Islander majority, Monterey Park, Alhambra, Rosemead, San Gabriel, San Marino, Temple City, and Arcadia, together

Thank you again for your service, and, most of all, thank you for listening to our community.

Sincerely,
(YOUR NAME)
