LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles firefighters and paramedics became the City’s first frontline workers to receive the COVID-19 vaccine today — part of the supply of 3,200 Moderna doses to be administered in this initial phase of vaccinations. Today’s vaccinations were administered at Fire Station 4 in Downtown Los Angeles, with Mayor Eric Garcetti and Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas in attendance.
“We can never do enough to express our gratitude for the courage, sacrifice, service, and selflessness of our firefighters, paramedics, and first responders — the extraordinary Angelenos who put it all on the line to administer COVID-19 tests, protect public health, and save lives,” said Mayor Garcetti. “The brave members of our LAFD have earned their place at the front of the line for this vaccine, and even as we stay vigilant in the face of surging cases, today gives us hope for an end in sight to this deadly pandemic.”

“Today marks an important step in our battle against COVID-19 as we roll out the vaccination program to our firefighters,” said LAFD Chief Terrazas. “Our first responders have been on the front line of the pandemic since the beginning and the vaccine is a crucial tool we can use to protect ourselves and others as the virus continues to surge here in California.”
This week, two more sites will be set up at a fire station in Watts and another in the San Fernando Valley.
The Mayor’s Office is working closely with the L.A. County Department of Public Health (DPH) to leverage existing infrastructure — for testing and flu shot distribution — to strengthen countywide vaccine efforts. As part of this collaboration, the LAFD will deploy mobile vaccination units to skilled nursing facilities within the City, and offer COVID-19 vaccinations for emergency health care practitioners.
To prepare for this effort, LAFD has obtained medical grade freezers and refrigerators for storage and started training paramedics to administer the COVID-19 vaccine, in partnership with the University of Southern California School of Pharmacology.

About the City of L.A.’s COVID-19 Testing and Vaccination Program：
The City of Los Angeles, in partnership with Curative, CORE, and the LAFD, operates one of the largest municipal COVID-19 free testing programs in the country, including the largest testing site in the nation at Dodger Stadium. Five of these testing sites, and an additional 32 mobile testing sites, provide free flu vaccines to the public in partnership with the USC School of Pharmacology and Curative; to date, the City teams have administered over 14,000 flu shots.
The City launched its testing program on March 20th to test first responders and vulnerable individuals. At Mayor Garcetti’s direction, free testing was rapidly offered to all residents, with or without symptoms, whether or not they have insurance. Since then, the City has tested over 3.2 million people and can test more than 46,000 people each day across 10 City testing sites and up to six mobile testing sites.
